Background & Experience

Luis “El Profe Lucho” Escobar Pocaterra, a beloved figure in his community, has spent the last 15 years transforming lives through baseball. At 79 years old, Lucho, though not a professionally trained coach, brings a wealth of personal experience as a former player and an unwavering passion for the sport. Living in an underserved neighborhood, he saw the need to offer children and teens—both boys and girls—a positive outlet through baseball, which he believes is vital for their personal and social development.

Throughout his journey, “El Profe Lucho” has mentored countless young athletes, including Jordan Díaz, the first Major League player from Córdoba, and two others who have signed professional contracts. Yet his true legacy lies in shaping well-rounded individuals. Many of his players have gone on to pursue higher education, vocational careers, or softball, with 23 Córdoba state teams and several Colombian national teams emerging from his program.

For Lucho, baseball is more than a sport—it’s a way to teach responsibility, respect, and community values. His philosophy includes a spiritual component, instilling in his players a love for the game, their teams, and the effort they put into every practice and match.

His relationship with Project Béisbol is built on deep admiration and gratitude. One of his most memorable experiences was when Project Béisbol brought young players to Colombia, sharing their mutual love for baseball and fostering bonds of unity and respect. Known for his tireless commitment, “El Profe Lucho” continues to inspire his community, always returning to the field where the children eagerly await his guidance and encouragement.
