and the MLBPAA Players Alumni Association over the years to improve and expand our impact in Latin America. Here are some of the highlights of our partnership.
Exchange Program events 2019 – USA Marlins and Mets:
Project Beisbol was selected to lead the U.S. Department of State’s “Sport for Social Change” program between the USA and Colombia. This unique program incorporated baseball/softball with education (gender equality, conflict resolution and leadership workshops), cultural/language exchange and international community service. 16 adolescent ball players and 4 adult leaders from 5 states were selected to join Project Beisbol for an 8 day mission of learning, teamwork and growth from Bogota to Monteria and Cartagena, Colombia. As well as 22 Colombian players and leaders who joined us as we carried out a similar program across the USA.
MLB Players Trust Goodwill Tour – Colombia
Players Trust Goodwill Tour and Grant – Colombia – 2019-2023: In 2019, we were selected to manage Players Goodwill Tour in Colombia with over 15 active MLB stars to promote the sport in and develop integration programs for Venezuelan refugees from December 10–13, 2019, in three different cities. The Goodwill Tour included baseball clinics for Colombian and Venezuelan youth organized in conjunction in Cartagena and Barranquilla, and a formal reception in the capital city Bogotá hosted by the US Ambassador, Philip S. Goldberg. The Major League players that participated in all or part of the Goodwill tour will included: Gio Ushella, Jose Altuve, José Quintana, Herald Ramirez, Julio Teheran, Tayron Guerrero, Marwin González, Félix Hernandez, Francisco Cervelli, Sandy León, Wilson Ramos, Carlos Carrasco, Eduardo Rodríguez, Eduardo Escobar, David Peralta, Nick Burdi, and former Colombian great Edgar Renteria.
The Major League Baseball Players Association was represented by Executive Director and former Major League player Tony Clark, Senior Director of Player Operations Leonor Colon and Player Operations Manager Vickie Carballo, as well as former Major League players Javy Vazquez and Jose Cruz.
The tour also consisted of a $150,000 donation to Project Beísbol for the purpose of equipment donations and education programs which have benefited over 1,500 kids in Colombia since 2019. See a recent NBC article discussing the event and the Players Trust donation.
MLBPAA Tour
For two years straight, Project Béisbol has led youth clinics and coaches training workshops with the MLBPAA (Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association) with ex-MLB stars. In October 2023, we organized the first tour of its kind in three cities in Brazil and continued on to Colombia to carry out the tour in four cities. Learn more about this historic tour.
In November 2022, we lead the first round of three high-impact baseball clinics for youth ballplayers and baseball coaches in Medellín, Cucuta and Bogotá. The event included motivational talks and a large equipment donation to the youth teams participating.
The goal of the MLBPAA Tour is to ensure that the baseball communities and leaders in these locations have the sports equipment, technical knowledge and local government support to increase access to recreational and competitive baseball activities for young Colombian, Brazilian and Venezuelan ballplayers.
Jose Mosquera First Pitch at the Oakland A’s
In August 2021, Jose Mosquera capped off his journey in the USA by throwing out the first pitch to his hero Jed Lowrie at the athletics vs. padres game. He also got to meet some other stars. On top of that, the Oakland A’s made a generous contribution to Project Beisbol and recognized us as their Partner Charity for the game.
Miami Marlins Colombian Heritage Night Celebrations
The Project Beisbol team is honored to celebrate each year with over 30 staff, volunteers, vendors and friends in South Florida the Miami Marlins Colombian Heritage Night. Thanks to the Marlins for their continued support for our organization and the kids of Colombia!
Homerun for Equality – Nicaragua
In January 2018, Project Béisbol partnered with the U.S. Embassy and 4 MLB players to offer professional baseball clinics and promote gender equality, benefiting over 500 boys and girls in 5 in Nicaragua. With the support of the Nicaraguan Federation of Associated Baseball (FENIBA) and the Major League Players Association, these clinics were led by Major League Baseball players Jed Lowrie (USA) of the Oakland Athletics; John Mayberry, Jr. (USA), former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder; Juan Carlos Ramírez (Nicaragua), pitcher for Los Angeles Angels; and former Minnesota Twins pitcher, Albert Williams (Nicaragua). Thanks to the support of the U.S. Embassy and Jed Lowrie, Project Béisbol was able to donate over 1000 lbs. of baseball and softball supplies, benefiting over 500 boys and girls across the country.
Jed Lowrie Event – Colombia
In 2015, as part of the Diamond Diplomacy program, a partnership between the United States State Department and Major League Baseball, one of our biggest supporters, Jed Lowrie, traveled to Colombia to run three successful baseball clinics in Bogota, Barranquilla and Cartagena. We visited three cities in three days working with kids from underprivileged neighborhoods. With the help of U.S. Ambassador Kevin Whitaker, Anna de Pelaez, director of Little League in Colombia and Project Beisbol.
MLB Players Trust Grant: 2022-2023
We are honored and privileged to work with the Players Trust to continue to provide Latin American children with access to baseball and softball and educational programs. Thanks to the trust generated by so many years of work in the Latino communities, we received a grant for the sum of $54,913 USD to operate in 2022 and 2023.
The programs sponsored by the grant are:
- Colombia – Venezuela Integration Program
- Scholarships for 50 students from our All-Star English program
- Equipment donations for Colombia and Brazil in partnership with Good Sports
- Brazil Expansion Plan
- Learn Fresh Partnership – Implementation of the MLB Players STEM League Curriculum in Colombia
Government
Project Béisbol has had the honor to work with Department of State and the U.S. Embassies in Colombia and Nicaragua for nearly 10 years to strengthen our programs, create news ones and develop strong relationships with the local communities and governments. We are also proud to have work with the Colombia Presidents office (APC) to facilitate the importation of essential baseball and softball supplies and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to teach students English. Furthermore, we have recently begun to partner with local governments in Colombia to bring the joy of baseball to hundreds. Here are some highlights of programs we have worked on with our government partners.

- 2 charity softball events to raise funds for Project Beisbol in Colombia with US Ambassador Whitaker.

It works with organized non-profit baseball and softball programs in the region, leveraging the sport as a mechanism for peace, social change, gender equality, international education and regional unity. Since 2008, Project Béisbol has benefited 3,000 kids in 55 communities in 6 countries.
US Embassy in Colombia – Sport for Social Change:
In 2018, Project Béisbol was selected by the US Department of State and the University of Montana to design and manage a unique two-way international exchange program called Sport for Social Change: USA-Colombia. The program united baseball and softball with education, cultural exchange and community service.
